Location Description & Characteristics
General Description:
Cappadocia is a UNESCO World Heritage region in Central Anatolia, world-renowned for its "fairy chimney" rock formations carved by centuries of volcanic ash erosion. The area’s dramatic valleys, cave dwellings and soft tuff rock landscape make it one of the most iconic hot air ballooning destinations in the world, attracting hundreds of thousands of balloon flights annually.
Geographic Position:
Cappadocia, Nevşehir Province, Central Anatolia, Türkiye. Approx. coordinates: 38.64°N, 34.83°E (Göreme area). Elevation of the surrounding plateau: approx. 1,000–1,250 m above sea level.
Topography:
A high volcanic plateau (average elevation approx. 1,100 m) shaped by erosion into a network of valleys, canyons and rock pinnacles ("fairy chimneys"), interspersed with open agricultural plains and gently rolling terrain suitable for balloon launch and landing. The extinct volcanoes Erciyes (3,916 m) and Hasan Dağı (3,253 m) are visible landmarks bordering the region.
Landing Areas:
Landing areas consist mainly of open agricultural fields, vineyards and flat plains surrounding the valleys, with prior landowner permissions arranged by the organising committee. Some restricted zones exist near protected historical/archaeological sites and tourist areas, which will be marked on the competition maps.
